BERKELEY FLEA MARKET REJUVENATION PROJECT
Why we are asking you to support the Flea Market this summer?
1) It’s a space that has been “ours” and we want to hold it. The developers are beginning a campaign of diminishing the Flea Market and painting it as something that is dying out. There has been discussion of moving it elsewhere, but so far that talk has been shut down by the flea market faithful, and there are no concrete plans known, to displace the market. But of course there are plans. We want to preempt whatever nefarious plot they have cooking by presenting a more flourishing, happening version and vision of the Flea Market. There is a whole lot of stuff that can happen in a space like that, and we want to develop this potential into fruition. Development of the mind and soul rather than the artificial skyline and the pockets that are lined from ‘development” as we know it. There are seeds planted in that space for us to grow,
2) We think the area is a key zone in the fight against gentrification. We have a lot of people in the south Berkeley/North Oakland zone still. We need to cut them off at the pass so to speak. Personally I have always bounced around from Berkeley to Oakland and occasionally Albany or El Cerritto or whatever. The struggles in the east bay and sf are linked, and we shouldn’t focus on Oakland alone. We have a right to space in Berkeley, Oakland, Mendocino, wherever, but we need to hold onto the areas where we still have folks and some power and build from there. We need/want to bring more people, and life back to that area and push out from there hopefully. At least this is one possible strategy to fight back against gentrification. Maybe we can discuss other strategies from there.
3) It’s possible to create some economic activity for many of us who could use it, and work on models that can be applied elsewhere. It is also possible to create a space where ideas and projects and health can flourish and apply the model elsewhere.
4) The weather should be nice
