Sahar Khoury (Artist) x Tomiko Jones (Curator)
2 x 2 Solos is a series of exhibitions featuring new work from four accomplished emerging Bay Area artists. The program recognizes artistic excellence and supports the freedom to create challenging and noncommercial work.
In “The Custodian,” Luca Antonucci explores issues of artistic authenticity and authorship. Starting from an obsession with art forgeries and their implications, Antonucci focused on the practice of art conservation for the work in his installation. The conservator is tasked with the impossible challenge of making an artwork last indefinitely but inevitably alters the work in an attempt at preservation. Apt for a seasoned publisher, the core of Antonucci’s site-specific installation takes the form of a book — one that cleverly employs ambiguity to frame a collection of found images that muddle the definition of art.
Sahar Khoury’s installation “ZOO” aesthetically examines security bars. Traditionally designed to protect and provide safety from the possible intrusion of others, Khoury’s sculptural take on security bars suggest a new kind of urban landscape. Like much architecturally-informed sculpture, her pieces deconstruct (literally) the functional and practical parts of their referents. Her installation also features carnivorous plants.
