Cy de Groat is an artist living in San Francisco and working in paper collage and acrylic. Over the last several years, in addition to several solo shows in nearby Pacifica, CA, Cy contributed artwork to local quarterly magazine, Meatpaper, until its final issue in 2013. Cy recently completed three large pieces for The Oakland Octopus Literary Salon, a performance space and café in Oakland, CA.
The subject matter of Cy’s pieces could be characterized as psychological landscape, though often of an interior sort that may sometimes look more like a machine or a system. Using words and figurative elements in combination with evocative color, Cy seeks to portray the thinking that goes into making sense of the world while striving to be a better human. Words are used to unearth the mantras and aphorisms we concoct and the contradictions we accept to make our way through life.
