Matlena Hourula is a Finnish American mixed media artist who draws her inspiration from the fragility and ephemeral beauty of memory. She works with found objects, old photographs, collage, encaustic wax and light.
As an artist in residence at Free Oakland UP, she is looking forward to creating mixed media collages, light boxes and three dimensional work. Matlena is a flea market and thrift store addict and can’t wait for the creative challenge of using what she finds at free up Oakland to create new work! Ven Voisey is a Oakland-based multi-disciplinary artist, working in sculpture, installation and sound. His practice, however, is unified by an overarching interest in communication — the possibility or impossibility of translation — between each other and one’s self, across circumstance and species, and through time and technology
“During my residency with Free Oakland UP, I would like to work with the idea of temporary architecture (tents/shelters), the delineation of space, and developing modes of communication between those spaces through various methods of activating the materials at hand. I would like to set up circumstances for people to hide from plain sight, but somehow send signals to each other. This would ideally take place with a variety of scale.” Check out his website: http://www.v—v.net/
