August 03, 2016 at Ferry Plaza Wine Merchant in San Francisco.
Eugenio is widely known and admired in the San Francisco wine community for not only being a fun and gregarious personality but also as an excellent sommelier, having run several prestigious restaurant wine programs including most notably at Jardinière for over a decade. He is naturally passionate about Portugal, being a proud Brazilian who speaks the local tongue, and is especially passionate about her wines. Of them he says, “No other country has a range of indigenous grape varieties to match Portugal’s. This huge palette of different grapes was introduced to Portugal over a long and exciting history of winemaking, traced by archaeologists back to the Bronze Age. Portugal has in excess of 250 indigenous grapes, only a few of which have travelled (in a very small way) anywhere else in the world. Not even Italy can surpass it when considering the natural variability of each species.”
In order to provide a perspective of Portugal’s amazing diversity, Eugenio has selected his favorite whites from the most important regions of the country; Dão, Bairrada, Douro, Alentejo and Minho with one of the finest examples of Vinho Verde from the Soalheiro winery. As a truly special treat, the flight will also include the 2002 vintage of the Branco “Reservado” from the historic Buçaco estate. This is the first time the wine has been available in the U.S. and it is extremely limited. It promises to be a great night of distinctive and delicious whites perfect to enjoy for summer, with our wonderful host, Eugenio, to guide us through it all!
