Masked performers ascend the staircase with vessels of water attached to their outstretched arms. The weight of these makeshift wings pulls them back as they move towards the top.
The performance speaks to the ever-present tension between struggle and beauty, stillness and change. You Fly expands upon previous works by Ogunji including Will I still carry water when I am a dead woman? (Lagos, 2011 & 2013) and Can’t I just decide to fly? (Capetown, 2014). These endurance performances posed questions about the work of women, labor, redemption and the politics of change.
